Details of classification tests for rigid materials or materials made rigid (adhesive coatings) of all thicknesses and for flexible materials of a thickness greater than 5 mm (excluding filtering media).
1. Principal test(s)
Heat Radiation Tests (French standard NFP 92-501:1995)
In this test, the sample materials are exposed to a source of radiating heat, in the conditions defined below, in order to cause:
- the (possible) ignition of the gases emitted;
- spreading of the combustion
The material, which is inclined at 45°, is exposed to a predetermined level of heat, the source of which is an electric radiator, whose surface is kept at 30mm from the surface of the material. The gases emitted come into contact with igniters which are positioned on each side of the material. Each test lasts for 20 minutes.
2. Additional tests

3. Preparation of sample materials
The sample materials (of normal dimensions) are kept inside an area with fixed climatic conditions (23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5% relative humidity) until constant weight is reached, i.e. when two successive weighings, separated by a period of 24 hours, do not yield results differing by any more than 0.1% or 0.1g.
4. Classification of materials (French standard NFP 92-507: 2004)
The classification of the materials is determined after the completion of the above tests.
The materials are given one of the following four classifications: M1, M2, M3, or M4.
Only materials for which there is no effective ignition in the heat radiation test can be given a classification of M0.

5. Durability tests
In accordance with French standard NF P 92-512, this item does not (a priori) require a durability test.
