Each page is a very thin durable sheet of paper. When the paper is moistened by the water in the pen, it becomes see-through and reveals the picture underneath. No chemicals involved.

The pen can be refilled with water and the pages dry back to black and white so they can be colored again. The brush is sturdy and holds plenty of water for painting. Squeezable but does not leak and unscrews easily for refilling.
